Chain Wheel Selection
A chain wheel allows floor-level manual operation of valves installed overhead, in pits or behind restricted access. Selection depends on valve torque, handwheel diameter, installation height and the operator's standing position. Ductile iron suits general plant service, while SS304 or SS316 is preferred for food, pharmaceutical, marine and corrosive environments. A chain wheel transfers operating effort but does not multiply torque; high-torque valves may also need a gearbox.
Basket Strainer Selection
A basket strainer captures debris before it reaches pumps, meters, control valves and heat exchangers. Screen opening is selected according to the smallest particle that could damage downstream equipment. Finer openings create more pressure loss and require more frequent cleaning. Ductile iron, WCB and stainless steel bodies are available with removable stainless steel baskets.
Install the strainer upstream of the equipment being protected and after an isolation valve. Leave enough clearance to remove the basket, and use differential pressure as the cleaning indicator where possible.
